Sanity check for the New Year intentions, resolutions, whatever you call them

What make it easy for us to take some actions and it seems easy to keep them going and for some other actions, despite the highly declared motivation, we just procrastinate or simply avoid starting or continuing?

No, I don’t believe is not only a matter of determination.

Yes, I agree that sometimes we intent to do things that are not ours at 100% – they are the desires or expectations of our family, colleagues, hierarchical superiors, it’s a matter of fashion etc. Those are the best candidates at procrastination and you shouldn’t feel bad not succeeding at them.

Imagine you intent to get promoted in your job, because that’s what your family expects from you, what your ex-colleague from school did last year etc. You actually hate your profession. You do it right, because that’s what we learn in school to do things right even when they are not our passion, but your profession you hate it more than just math in school.  You say that the boss is too hard on you, the evaluation system is not right, and so on.Would you be happy to get that promotion after all?  Imagine your life after you got promoted… The fact that you find all the reasons for not fighting for it should get your full attention.

It isn’t about you not being able to get it; it is about a major contradiction between what others expect from you, and your own needs and desires.

Do we have to trust our guts and just erase from our New Year intention list those that don’t resonate with us?I would say so, or at least reflect on it and adapt it until it becomes yours. Maybe instead of a promotion you want to do an additional training to get you closer to your passion.

To me, our motivation to take or not action and to keep it going or not is a mélange of needs or desires spiced up with our inner values. When inner values marry well with needs or desires actions starts and keeps going with relatively no effort.

To make sure that not only you move in action, but also that you will keep it going you have to make a check of how aligned is your intention with your needs, desires and values. Your Needs, Desires and Values!

What are your intentions for this New Year? Would it be easy to follow up on them?
