Be aware – negative beliefs have appealing benefits ;-)

Beliefs are tricky, since they always seem to be logical and waterproof. The world is flat, was a strong belief some hundreds years ago and people had to die to prove that it was a wrong belief.

We all have beliefs that are already part of ourselves; some sort of evidence supports them like for example:

Belief Some sort of evidence…
I learn easy I always had good marks in school
I have to work long hours to be successful at work That’s what my boss does anyway
I can do anything I set my mind to As much as I remember I always achieved my goals
Inexperienced young people are never hired Some of the young people you know are still unemployed despite their good education

Some of them are positive beliefs, with really good benefits to our whole life, but of course some others don’t let us move forward and live the life we want.

As crazy as that sounds negative beliefs have appealing benefits. They act as false friends. They “allow” us to have certain behaviors and we use them as “excuses” for failure or no action. Let me give you few examples:

Belief Payoffs
I have to work long hours to be successful at work I don’t have to look for solutions to be home earlier
The job market is too competitive, I can never get the job of my dreams I can stay in the comfort zone of this job that’s going nowhere
I have a bad temper Of course I will scream as soon as something doesn’t go the way I want
I don’t sleep well I can be tired, non-productive, moody…

Sometimes, simply by recognizing a limiting belief you take its all power away. This is among the main attention points in the Life Coaching, challenging your negative beliefs and helping you build a positive beliefs system.

What are your beliefs? Do they serve you well? Do you need some of your beliefs to be challenged?
